John Charles Johnson

Dec 11, 1939 — Oct 8, 2026

John Charles Johnson was born on December 11, 1939, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Jessie Johnson and Nellie Webb Johnson. He departed this life on October 8, 2026, at the age of 86.

John proudly served his country in the United States Army for more than 20 years, including service during the Vietnam War. He retired in 1979 with the rank of Master Sergeant. Following his military career, he earned a bachelor's degree in Accounting and Business Administration from North Carolina A&T State University and later retired from the United States Postal Service.

In 1993, John gave his life to the Lord and faithfully served Him until his passing. He served as a deacon and trustee at Grace Family Worship Center in North Carolina before joining Impact Church, where he participated in the Christmas Choir and couples ministry. In 2024, John and his wife relocated to Franklin, Tennessee, where they quickly found their church home at Watson Grove Baptist Church.

To know John was to know a man of extraordinary kindness and patience. Affectionately called "Dad" by many beyond his own family, he became a father figure to friends of his daughters and members of the churches he attended.

Even after becoming ill in August 2026, John's faith remained evident. He continued to sing, recite Scripture, and respond to praise and worship. One of the last songs he sang was "To God Be the Glory."

A gifted poet, John published his book, I Heard from God, in 2021. A singer, teacher, and protector, his wisdom, gentle spirit, and steady presence left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

John was preceded in death by his daughter, Yvonne Marie Adams, in 2013; his parents; and four siblings. He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 64 years, Vera Williams Johnson; his daughter, Yulonda Denise (Walter) Latham; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two brothers and a sister; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
