Helen Weaks Reed of Nashville, Tennessee, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, September 19, 2021. She was born on February 26, 1936, to the late Thomas Elton Weaks Sr. and Mary Lucy Bayer Weaks, of Cumberland City, Tennessee. She was also preceded in death by her husband Dr. H.B. Reed and a sister, Emily Weaks Green (Jobe) as well as several in-laws George Thomas Reed, Carthon Marcus Reed (Ruth) and Edsel Reed. She is survived by a sister, Elnor Weaks McMahan Corgan and a brother, Dr. Thomas E. Weaks Jr. (Elizabeth) as well as two sisters-in-law Penelope Reed and Frances Reed. She was also survived by many nieces and nephews, Whit McMahan, John McMahan (Jennifer), Dr. Mary Weaks-Baxter (Brent), Rebecca Weaks Brandvik (Neal), Mark Reed (Ginny), Rebecca Earnhardt (Neil), Kirk Reed (Cheryl), Neal Reed, Carolyn Seely, Charles Reed, Joyce Reed, Scott Reed (Delphine), Kathy Reed (Craig) and David Reed (Elizabeth).
Helen received the Master of Science degree in Related Arts from the University of Tennessee in 1965. She taught Art for 30 years at Riverdale High School in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Her specialty was pottery.
Helen and H.B. participated in competitive long-distance racing for more than 30 years. She completed 33 marathons, including the Boston Marathon, and 29 ultra-marathons. Also, Helen and H.B. enjoyed traveling. Over the years they traveled in 32 counties, and six continents.
Helen has been a resident at Richland Place on Elmington Avenue since H.B.’s death. She was an active member of Blakemore United Methodist Church on Harding Road and participated in its mission program in Uganda, Africa and in numerous retreats.
